OKLAHOMA CITY – The Oklahoma Classics stakes events for eligible Oklahoma-bred 2-year-olds were conducted on Sunday at Remington Park with a pair of rising stars continuing their local success with impressive runs.
Pleasant Storm won the $60,000 Heritage Place Juvenile for the males while Shotgun Gulch was victorious in the $60,000 Horse Racing Radio Network Lassie for the fillies. Both races were contested at six furlongs.

Pleasant Storm proved much the best in the Juvenile and stayed perfect through two career starts. Owned by Vickie Fixley of Oklahoma City and trained by Joe Petalino, the 2-year-old colt was ridden sharply by Bryan McNeil. Pleasant Storm was under a tight hold over the first quarter-mile, saving his run until the stretch. Needing to avoid traffic issues with eight of the 12 in the field battling for the early lead, Pleasant Storm rolled 6-wide through the turn and still had plenty left to pull away to a two-length win in 1:10.93 over the fast track. "His last race set up perfect for us,” McNeil said. “This race we wanted to make sure to get him out of the gate and once I asked him, he made his move around the turn he was all game." Hollywood Ice ran a big race through traffic and down the rail in the stretch but settled for second. Right Squall moved wide along with the winner but could not keep pace, taking third. Away at 9-2 odds, Pleasant Storm paid $11.20 to win, $7 to place and $4.20 to show. Hollywood Ice paid $4.40 to place and $3 to show. Right Squall returned $7 to show. Macho Agent was the beaten 4-5 wagering favorite, finishing fourth, 4-3/4 lengths behind the winner. A 2-year-old colt by Pleasant Tap from the Stormin Fever mare Burning Fever, Pleasant Storm added $36,000 to his earnings which now stand at $53,956.

Shotgun Gulch was strong in winning the Lassie by 1-1/2 lengths over the pace-setting Vertical Vision. Owned and trained by C.R. Trout of Edmond, Okla. and ridden by Luis Quinonez, Shotgun Gulch moved four-wide through the turn after racing close to the pace for the first quarter-mile. She glided down the stretch appearing to have something in reserve in crossing the finish in 1:10.28.
"She ran a good race,” Quinonez said. “I just took my time.”
At 2-1 odds, Shotgun Gulch paid $6.80 to win, $2.80 to place and $2.10 to show. Vertical Vision, the heavy wagering favorite at 1-2 odds, paid $2.10 to place and $2.10 to show. C. J. Jones battled with Vertical Vision for the lead early in the race and held third, paying $2.40 to show.
Shotgun Gulch has won all three of her starts this season at Remington Park. Her only career defeat came in a turf stakes event at Retama Park near San Antonio last month. A filly by 1995 Kentucky Derby winner Thunder Gulch from the Boston Harbor mare Rosieville, Shotgun Gulch made $36,000 in the Lassie to push her career money to $92,448.
