2008 WILL ROGERS DOWNS MEET BEGINS FEBRUARY 23 By Jenni Foster
CLAREMORE, Okla. – Live thoroughbred racing kicks off next month at Cherokee Casino Will Rogers Downs during the track’s 2008 spring meet. In its third season of live racing, Will Rogers Downs expects its largest and richest meet yet with 44 race days, including introducing thoroughbred races to the schedule.
“We are extremely excited to include thoroughbred stakes races at Will Rogers Downs,” said David Stewart, CEO of Cherokee Nation Enterprises, which operates Cherokee Casinos. “The greater purse amounts allow us to attract top quality horses and bigger crowds.”
Cherokee Casino Will Rogers Downs 2008 spring meet schedule includes 352 thoroughbred horse races beginning February 23 with the last race taking place on May 27. Also added to the stakes race schedule of quarter, paint and appaloosa horse races are 4 thoroughbred stakes races occurring in May.
In addition to last year’s complete track reconstruction, more amenities are also in store just in time for this year’s spring meet. Construction of 26 new dorm rooms wraps up this month. The new rooms are a much-needed addition to the 28 current dorm rooms.
Trainers and exercisers will also appreciate the new Equi-ciser arriving this month. The top-of-the-line Equi-ciser allows up to ten horses to exercise at one time.
Cherokee Casino Will Rogers Downs will race every Saturday, Monday and Tuesday through May 27. The first race day begins on Saturday, February 23 with entries beginning on Tuesday, February 19.
