NEW SUPPLEMENT PAYMENT ADDED FOR OLDER HORSES

Many horsemen wanted the opportunity to enter the program after the end of the nomination process as younger horses. Due to these requests previously a change was made to allow 2 year old horses to be nominated for life with two additional added penalty dates. A 2 year old may nominate after December 31st of their yearling year until April 1st of their 2 year old year with a payment of $2,700 or after April 1st until July 31st of that year with a payment of $10,000. No additional opportunities for lifetime nomination for 2 year olds is available, after the July 31st date.

Again many wished to be able to make older horses not originally nominated to the program eligible to participate. After much discussion with horsemen and the members of the Board of Directors of the OTA a decision was made to offer the opportunity to nominate for a single year of the races. Any Oklahoma Bred 3 years old and older, may pay a supplement fee equal to 10% of the purse for any race, up to time of entry for the race. This is only a one-time fee for that year’s race and does not make the horse eligible for life. Contact the OTA office with any questions regarding these new changes or about the Oklahoma Classics in general. 90% of the funds from these supplements will be put into the purses for 2008.

Million Dollar Day for Classics 2010

The Oklahoma Thoroughbred Association (OTA), The Thoroughbred Racing Association of Oklahoma (TRAO), and Remington Park are announcing the first $1 million day for thoroughbred racing in Oklahoma history. The date for the 2010 event will be October 22, 2010 at Remington Park in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

The Oklahoma Classics has been conducted annually for 17 years by the OTA. The 2010 event will consist of 10 races for Oklahoma Classics nominated or supplemented Oklahoma Bred horses.

The largest single day of thoroughbred racing in the history of Oklahoma is directly made possible by the partnerships created with several Native American Tribal Off-Track Betting (OTB) locations throughout Oklahoma. The establishment of these OTB’s by the various Tribes throughout Oklahoma will substantially boost the Oklahoma Thoroughbred industry statewide.

Scott Wells, General Manager of Remington Park states;

“$1 million plus in purses for a single racing program for Oklahoma Bred horses is an important milestone for Oklahoma horseracing. It signifies the growth taking place in an important segment of the state’s agricultural economy. As some key horse breeding states like Kentucky are losing ground economically, it’s good to see Oklahoma moving forward.”

Dan Case, President OTA states;

“This is a big step in advancing the Oklahoma Bred program to a level that will rival the best programs in the United States. We hope this will take the program to another level that will help the Oklahoma Thoroughbred Breeders and the people that race these horses.”

Donnie K. Von Hemel, President TRAO states;

“The support of our industry by the Tribal OTB’s is exciting. With our partnerships continuing to grow, the Owners and Breeders of Oklahoma Bred thoroughbred horses will continue to see our industry grow statewide. The Oklahoma Classics will be similar to the state-bred events in; Maryland, Florida and Illinois.”
